Declaring Your Heart’s Desire
Long before The Four Agreements was published, bestselling author and Toltec master don Miguel Ruiz would often hear people say, “Your teachings are so beautiful, Miguel. You should write a book!” To which Miguel would answer quietly with a smile, “I will write a book when a publisher comes to me.”
Was this egotism? Not at all; it was patience. It was alignment. Miguel was waiting for a sign. That sign finally arrived when he was introduced to an American publisher on a power journey in Teotihuacan, Mexico. The next day, Miguel took the publisher to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, where he performed a short, simple ceremony, saying, “Now we’re going to write a beautiful book, and it is going to go all over the world!”
Was this the voice of pride? Not at all. It was the voice of pure intent. Miguel spoke quietly, with authority and conviction. But his was more than the voice of a “normal” human being. At the moment the words were spoken, the man was a mouthpiece for the spirit of love.
And the answer from the universe? Thy will be done! Since its publication fifteen years ago, The Four Agreements has been translated into thirty-six languages and sold more than seven million copies worldwide. No sooner than the words were spoken, Miguel’s declaration took on a life of its own, and over the years it has flowered into a magnificent gift to humanity.
What is your gift to humanity? What is your declaration? What is the statement of life that wants to burst forth from your lips? If it hasn’t emerged already, it has probably been nudging you for years, kicking like a baby waiting to be born. It is the very reason you are here. Just look inside your heart. You can feel it if you focus and let go. Spend some time in the silence and you will hear it calling, beyond all the distractions of daily life. It’s a current. It’s a feeling. It’s a river of love. After you have identified your heart’s desire, ask, “Now, how can I make it real?” Whatever blocks you find may be only minor distractions, and they can be easy to dispel. Just take a few slow, deep breaths. As you let them out, release everything but the present moment, this nick of time, and go into the emptiness of your eternal being. From that space, ask the question: “What needs to be done?” Then do it.
Start with a declaration. State your intent boldly to the universe, as the creator you are: “I am going to write a beautiful book.” “I am going to live a beautiful life.” Or whatever is in your heart. Then take action. Any action, however small, will get the wheels turning and affirm to the universe that you mean business.
When you are aligned like this, you draw the attention of unseen forces. You program your subconscious to work overtime. You attract unseen allies. You set up conditions and coincidences you could never have imagined. It’s exciting and unpredictable. It’s surprising and uncontrollable. But that’s half the fun. Don’t focus on controlling. Don’t focus on clearing. Don’t focus on trying. Just do it. Allow the passion of your dream’s destiny to thunder into your life like a roiling flash flood.
“Now we’re going to write a beautiful book, and it is going to go all over the world!” Feel the audacity of it. Let your declaration go out in all directions, just like Miguel’s. Let your voice be aligned with life, the force of creation. As you do, know that you are lighting a fuse, igniting a flame, setting in motion a chain reaction that will draw to you like a magnet all the resources you could ever need.
Finally, as you send your declaration out, allow yourself to feel the power and beauty—and yes, the humility—of it all. You are riding the crest of an enormous wave, and its arrival is assured. This is You. This is magic. This is Life with a capital “L.”
