To Retreat or To Renounce – That is the Question!

Leave everything as it is and rest your weary mind
~ Dzogchen teaching

Chortan, Dochu Pass, BhutanLet’s take a close look at these two words – retreat and renounce. One conjures up an almost spa-like atmosphere, while the other has connotations of deprivation and isolation. Both perceptions are a bit off the mark and, actually, I believe retreating and renouncing are mutually beneficial and essential to spiritual awakening and renewal.

To retreat is to take time away from your ordinary life to whatever end you intend (relaxation, refocusing, energizing). In a spiritual sense, to retreat is to go to a place of quiet, safety, and seclusion in order to nourish our inner life of spirit. It’s a time to allow peace and calm to rule the day, a time to allow the body to wind down, the mind to quieten, and our deepest feelings to arise.

Spiritual retreat is about getting still, mentally and physically, for a prolonged period of time, in order to allow our feelings to open. Retreat takes us to the light and the shadow places of our emotions and gives us the time and space to deal with them.

Spirit speaks to us when we stop and let go. This is the heart of retreat.

And speaking of letting go…

Renunciation is not about pushing something away, it is about letting go. It’s facing the fact that certain things cause us pain, and they cause other people pain. Renunciation is a commitment to let go of things that create suffering. It is the intention to stop hurting ourselves and others.”

~ Noah Levine, Against the Stream: A Buddhist Manual for Spiritual Revolutionaries

bhutanIt’s true that some people renounce all of worldly life and move into a cave for the remainder of their lives. This is a profound spiritual path, but it’s only one facet of renunciation.

Renunciation, much like retreat, is as much a state of mind as a tangible action.

By taking the time to distance yourself far enough and long enough on a retreat, you are making a commitment to a deeper journey. Simultaneously renouncing thoughts that no longer serve you, actions that do not demonstrate your higher self, attachments that hold you back, and self-interests that keep you from connecting to others and to the divine, you impact the power of that commitment.

Renounce what holds you back from spiritual awakening. Renounce with the spirit of really and truly learning something about yourself.

We have not even to risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time have gone before us. The labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god. And where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves. Where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we will be with all the world.

~ Joseph Campbell

Punakha Dzong, BhutanSpirit speaks to us when we stop and let go of ordinary concerns.

Sometimes, it is simply too hard to hear God’s voice above the din of our hectic lives. To walk the spiritual path, the decision to take time for your inner life is key. Stepping away from life, renouncing all that no longer serves you, and giving undivided attention to your higher spiritual self allows you to awaken to the presence of God in your daily life.
