Dear Friends,

This is year is just flying by – I can’t believe it’s May! Seriously. I actually took some time to book a trip to Bali for myself before there were no more reservations available on the island – in August! (I’m not kidding.) Same for you if you are thinking about traveling this year.

Travel is back up again and things are booking quickly again – that’s a good sign for our economy – finally!! So if you are looking to travel in May and June – I suggest you move quickly and book now.

The key to creating a sacred kitchen is changing your attitude toward it. Begin by appreciating the divine nature of the forces involved: The life force in food, the contribution of your own energy, and your ability to convey divine energy into the meal. Recognizing that these forces are part of your kitchen will allow you to see it with new eyes.

It is important to watch your thoughts as you are preparing food. Your thoughts go into the food – if you have healthy thoughts, the food is energized. This is why it is important to cook your own food whenever possible. It may take more time, but what you get is so much better for you. It feeds both your body and your spirit.

Begin thinking of your kitchen as a sacred space. When I first learned Ayurvedic cooking in India, we made an altar in the kitchen. This reminded us to prepare our consciousness by being present and totally focused on what we were doing.

Your altar may be as simple as putting a candle and incense on a pretty tray. Or it may be as elaborate as buying a small altar you can place in a corner of your kitchen, with a beautiful cloth and flowers, even pictures of deities or saints. Altars are very individual, but they do change the vibration of your kitchen.

In the Vedic tradition, the altar also has a purpose. We prepare our food consciously, and then we then offer that food to God before it is eaten. In this way the food is spiritualized. This changes its energy and vibration. I suggest using a special plate for this offering, one that is used for that purpose only. Once a prayer is said over the food, you can give everyone remnants of the food that has been offered. This food is specially blessed and considered a special treat.

When you change your food habits as well as your thoughts on preparing that food, it can truly become a meditation and very peaceful. It can also be relaxing and fun. Often I put on meditation music while I work to take me into a higher space. You will notice you start preparing healthier foods and you will develop a “higher taste.”

Spiritual Retreats India

Once I started my practice of cooking with consciousness, I noticed I was inspired to try new recipes all the time. The art and science of preparing food with a higher vibration opened me to learning new things all the time. It opened the gateway to creating better health and a happier life. It just makes sense, that when we elevate our consciousness around the food we eat that food activates higher consciousness in those who eat it. I think you will find this approach to preparing food is a happy and self-reinforcing practice.

If you’d like to learn more about the wonderful and ancient tradition of Ayurveda – I invite you to join Jahnava Devi, Mahatma Das, and myself as we personally guide you to some of India’s most beautiful, ancient, and spiritual places. So bring your husband, companion, friend, or come alone – but don’t miss this heart-felt experience, where you’ll practice Yoga on sacred landscapes, meet yogis and saints, bathe in sacred rivers, sing and chant ecstatic mantras, visit timeless temples and villages, and experience the timeless tradition of Bhakti.
