WHAT’S NEW? Do You Need a Major Reset in Your Life?

It’s almost the end of March and a great time to evaluate if this year is going in the direction you were wanting it to go.

Sheri RosenthalIf it is – congratulations! My guess is that you are great at taking action. But if it’s not – what happened? What’s stopping you from achieving your dreams for this year?

If I had to bet I’d say it’s not the external circumstances in your life – but rather internal issues that are hindering your dream.

There are tons of external issues that can derail us of course – but honestly, I’ve seen thousands of people over the years create amazing things in their lives under the worst circumstances. So why are some folks able to do so and others not?

Well that’s the question isn’t it? And it’s the exact question we seek to answer in our Personal Intensives. If you’re struggling right now and don’t have clarity – perhaps an intensive is just the opportunity you’ve been looking for to get your life back on track.

If you could use a major reset in your life, take a moment to read about our intensives and see if it sounds like the right opportunity for you. Changing your mind might completely change your life. 🙂

Blessings and love, Sheri Rosenthal

How can we learn from Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness policy?

When asked if capitalism wasn’t the best way for a country to generate wealth, His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama replied, “That depends on your definition of wealth.”

Bhutan spiritual journeyIn a world long dominated by the assumption that success and happiness can be found in “stuff” and any number of outer accomplishments, there is at least one place on Earth forging another way.

The tiny Kingdom of Bhutan uses Gross National Happiness (GNH) instead of Gross National Product (GNP) to define success and wealth for its citizens.

The principle, first used in 1972 and developed over the years using empirical research in the fields of happiness and positive psychology, is based on Buddhist spiritual values. It measures quality of life over quantity of production, holistic wellness over money.

Bhutan marketIt also provides a blueprint and framework for government policy planning. Any policy that becomes a law must first pass a Gross National Happiness review.

Don’t be confused. Bhutan absolutely cares about economics and GNP. But the government operates from the belief that material and spiritual growth must be given equal weight.

They must support and compliment each other. As such, GNH is rooted in four Buddhist values.

  • Socioeconomic development that is both sustainable and equitable.
  • Conserving the delicate ecology.
  • Promoting and preserving culture and heritage.
  • Good governance that encompasses not just economic growth but human development.

Bhutan spiritual retreatIn addition to this foundation, the complex instrument used to measure Gross National Happiness (which can take 6-7 hours to administer), looks at eight more general contributors to happiness: physical/mental/spiritual health, time-balance, community vitality, cultural vitality, education, living standards, good governance, and ecological vitality.

Is it any wonder that Bhutan has been rated by Business Week as the happiest country in Asia and the eighth happiest in the world?

So then how can we learn from Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness index and change our own standard operating procedure?

Bhutan dancersWell, there are three main aspects to Buddhism: religion, psychology, and philosophy. Philosophically speaking, Buddhism understands that everything that “exists” depends on something else for that existence.

We are all connected; we don’t operate in a vacuum. From this perspective, the only sane approach to government is to strive for balance and a mutual complement between economics and spiritual values.

Natural resources must be protected to provide for the future, human potential must be cultivated, good animal husbandry must be championed, protection – not exploitation – must be standard operating procedure.

Tigers NestThere are many things that draw me to Buddhism, not the least of which is its emphasis and ability to help improve everyday life through simple and loving practices.

So how can we apply Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness index to our own personal happiness?

By allowing ourselves to move through our days slowly and deliberately, making decisions based on blending physical/mental/spiritual health and not solely on outward material success.

Let’s opt for more high quality, self-loving actions in our lives, more community, more generosity, and more, well, happiness! Post below and let us know what you think! (And feel free to watch the video on Bhutan on the right – beautiful!)

Blessings + love, Lisa Tully

If you want to up your level of internal happiness and visit the amazing country of Bhutan (all the lovely pictures above are from Bhutan) – I highly recommend signing up for Lisa + Sheri’s upcoming Mastering the Buddha Nature Within – Dec 7-18th.

Sheri RosenthalSheri Rosenthal is the owner of Journeys of the Spirit and a lover of Bhutan. After leaving behind the world of medicine back in 1999, she spent nearly 8 years on a transformative spiritual quest studying with don Miguel Ruiz author of “The Four Agreements.” An author and teacher in her own right, she loves sharing the skills + tools she’s learned to shift her own reality, with others.

Lisa TullyLisa Tully left the corporate life after a deep calling in her heart pulled her to visit the Dalai Lama in India. It was like he had sent her a t-mail (telepathic mail!). After her visit she was inspired to create her own travel company, deepen her practice of Buddhism, and share her love of Buddhist teachings with others, like yourself!
