OUR FEATURED ARTICLE

Gotta Get Gratitude!

milky-wayGratitude is simply defined as a feeling of appreciation and when it becomes a way of life your world expands and life becomes so much richer, magical even. Being grateful for whatever is happening in your life is the best way to feel love and loved. The catch is, “How do I feel grateful when ‘bad’ things are happening in my life?”

I wasn’t always grateful, as a matter of fact I was pretty judgmental, controlling, fearful and miserable. My attitude was I’ll be grateful when I get what I want.

I remember talking to one of my mentors one day and she asked me what I was grateful for and in an angry voice I said, “NOTHING!” She lovingly replied, “If you believe you have nothing to be grateful for you are in BIG trouble.”

How right she was but at the time I couldn’t see it. I had just lost another job, had no money and wasn’t sure where my next meal was coming from.

jellyfishAfter a serious suicide attempt I woke up in intensive care with my chest full of holes where they had to inject my heart to restart it. When I was released from the hospital I was finally willing to do whatever it took to change my limiting thinking.

It didn’t take long to realize that gratitude was the doorway to freedom. It filled my life with a feeling of hope, love, acceptance, joy and ease. There were days I struggled to find a way to be grateful for everything in my life but I knew I needed to do just that.

I started and ended my day with a gratitude list. At first I wrote down at least 5 things I was grateful for twice a day but as time went on my life became longer each day. By focusing on gratitude my ability to love expanded exponentially.

I went from being chronically depressed, just barely scraping by financially and working at a series of jobs I hated. When I changed channels and began focusing on gratitude it felt like I was rocketed into another life, one where I loved what I was doing (no matter what that was) and fast forward I own a beautiful home on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Seriously my life is now filled with magic and miracles and lots and lots of love. And all I did was focus on gratitude and open up to what is really possible in life.

Not creating what you want?

pink-flowersThe shortcut to begin creating ‘what you do want’ is gratitude. When we have a lot of ‘what we don’t want’ in our life it is hard to focus on anything else. Often our minds will continually review a list of what’s wrong.

Whatever you focus your attention on you get more of so if you look around your life and experience fear, anger, sadness or hopelessness you will create events that will allow you to continue feeling that way.

On the other hand if you train your mind to focus on gratitude you will have more and more things to be grateful for.

Try this simple exercise for a month and see what happens. There is a trick though – you can’t do this exercise to get things you just need to be grateful for what is. (The more you focus on FEELING grateful the more what is generates events to feel grateful about.)

  • In the morning, before your feet hit the floor think of at least five things you are grateful for. Have a little competition with yourself add at least one more thing each day.
  • As you move through your day if you find yourself worrying or upset just stop and think of a few things you are grateful for. I call this changing the station. Change your mind’s station as often as necessary during the day.
  • Before you go to sleep at night write down at least five things you are grateful for and then set your intent for the next day. At first it might be I intend to focus on gratitude tomorrow. I set my intent to have my day run smoothly and to have everything be easy and effortless.

Gratitude leads to love. Love what is. Be grateful and be open to the magic that surrounds you. See what happens. I know if you do these simple things your life will become an incredible work of art.

No one taught me how to train my mind or use it as the incredible tool it is. Consciously choosing how you feel will change your life in ways you can’t even imagine.

Be grateful for a month. Really feel a sense of gratitude for what is, feel it and watch what happens. You will be amazed.

And remember the trick is to feel grateful for no other reason than to feel grateful.

With all my love, Susan Gregg
