Are you No-thing or Some-thing?
One of the most challenging aspects of our spiritual path is detaching from all those concepts we have about ourselves. As nice as some of these concepts may be, they can only create limitation for us in the long run. In addition, those ideas we have about ourselves that are not so kind, can be actually harmful to us.
I think we’re all familiar with the kinds of beliefs I’m speaking about here. Ones like: I’m not good at computers, art, athletics, dance, etc. Others like: I’m friendly, shy, outgoing, sexy, intelligent, dumb, pretty, ugly, fat, thin, etc. Also, let’s not forget any thought that begins with the sentence – I’m the kind of person who…
When we verbalize in this way we’re creating an energetic box for ourselves with our word. The truth is we are beings that are eternal and infinite. Even me saying those words I am creating a conceptual box too. The key is to move beyond all concepts and embody the deep understanding that we are all no-thing. Not the word “nothing” to be clear – I specifically mean “no-thing” or no-concept.
One of my favorite poems that illustrates what I am sharing is this one below:
I Have Learned So Much
I have learned so much from God that I can no longer call myself
a Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Jew.
The Truth has shares so much of itself with me
that I can no longer call myself a man, a woman, an angel, or even pure soul.

Perhaps you might take it as a challenge for the next couple of weeks to up your level of awareness and whenever you catch yourself about to put yourself into an energetic box – stop yourself immediately. Or if it already exited your mouth, take it back as an acknowledgment of your observation.
As we move though this process we keep moving our awareness from “I am a concept” to simply “I am”… and that is very powerful.

Sheri your article claiming that we are “no-thing” is right on the money, I find. If anyone is not sure, they can simply test it out for themselves. When I point my finger back at where others see my face, I see, no-thing. What do you find when you point your finger back at where others see your face? When I listen, I find that sound does not come through a pair of ears and then somehow rattle around in a head, I find that sounds simply happen in this vast empty capacity for everything that I really am! Sound happens in me. You are right, even the concept of “no-thing,” does not fit with what I really am, no concept fits life lived, now, in the first person singular. Blessings, love and thanks!
