GUEST ARTICLE
It’s Time to Access your Dreams, Passions & Goals!
For my birthday, my brother gave me a lovely gift. A book filled with all kinds of ancient African proverbs. A wonderful book that reminds me of the wise words that my grandmother, mother and other family members used to share with me, all wrapped up in beautiful metaphors. It was only a matter of seconds for this book to become one of my favorites, I even carry it in my handbag.
While I was thumbing through it, iI came across one of the many inspiring quotes from this book which says “Mother God is number two.” This quote made me aware of the role that our parents and other educators play in our lives. The saying suggests that apart from God (in the broadest sense of the word), the parents are initially the most important people in one’s life. That actually makes sense, given the responsibility they have for you as their child. They provide you with food and shelter, they give their best to teach you the difference between right and wrong, safety and danger, and everything else they feel you must know in the process of creating a happy life.
It is true that their responsibility and active engagement transforms and takes a different form in the different stages of your life, however, the basic rule of the role they play in your life remains. It is a blessing to have loving parents. Parents who, by their own trial and error, are fully committed to making sure you’re given all the opportunities you need to create the best possible future for yourself and all future generations.
As a child, there’s mainly one attitude expected of you while your parents take you through this process: that you cooperate! That you listen, obey and do as you’re told. That is, in most cases, a problem. A song by Madonna quotes: “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” What you should know is, no matter how good your parents’ intentions are, for you to have a happy future, there is a possibility that they have other aspirations for you than you do. The definition and perception of the perfect job, partner, house, or lifestyle for you is totally different from your own.
This could create an internal struggle between your personal dreams and goals, your parents’ view on your future and your own hopes and dreams. I know there are people who can effortlessly put aside their parents’ wishes and go their own way. However, chances are that you might feel challenged by your need to seek their permission versus the need to not let them dictate your every move or future.
Not all parents force their offspring to play by their rules, there are also parents who are good at simply expressing their preferences without forcing it on their children. And another group sets no direction or boundaries for the child, they simply choose not to interfere with the choices their offspring make.
What if you are part of the group, whose parents, despite all their best intentions, “force” their will upon you? For example, if you would like to become an artist, but your parents would rather have you choose another profession, one that ensures employment opportunities with more certainty and security. In this case they are mainly looking for you to do something, anything, that would enable you to pay the bills. After all, you can’t be happy if you can’t feed yourself.
Some rise up against their parents, by doing the opposite of what they want you to do, trying to win their power by showing who the real boss is. However, if you are more of an obedient child, then the consent of your parents for your actions will be more important than following your own path to your dreams. So instead of following your dreams, they become fantasies, a place of refuge during dark days or a place you should fear and avoid.
Well, our parents love us. There’s no question about that. And their way of showing us that love is to want us to be healthy, safe, loved by the right people and have financial security. However, in that process, what many parents do without even realizing it, is destroy our dreams rather than building them. It is quite normal and healthy for parents to want their children to be safe and protected, and for them to have enough food and a shelter. The challenge is that safety, certainty or security do not automatically lead to a safer, healthier and happier life.
It’s beautiful not to feel the need for our parents’ approval. To be able to listen to their advice, but ultimately make our own choices, choosing the path of our dreams, vision and goals over and over again. To follow our own heart. This is imperative for anyone who doesn’t just want to fantasize about their dreams, but actually start living them.
Our parents care deeply about us. This is not a question of who is right or wrong when making choices about what’s good for us. Instead, it is an encouragement to approach life differently, and in a way that you approve of yourself. And not one which is only supported by your parents views.
You want to live your dreams? Then stop listening to naysayers, instead spend time with people who are what you intend to be, start listening to your own inner voice and stop seeking permission from others to live your dreams.
So now I ask you a simple question: how can you make sure that you are living your life on your own terms? Whose opinions would you like to put aside so you can be free to follow your dreams? What can you do from this day on to enable this process?
Love, Mami Veza
Mami left her African home, overrun by civil war at the age of 11, in search of a safer country in a different part of the world. Her path in life consists of many stories (wars, living as a refugee, growing up without parents, being beaten, abused, and divorced).
Mami says: A lesson I have learned throughout all my challenges is that it’s not what is happening in our lives, but how we react to it, and the choices we subsequently make, is what determines our path in life, and the extent to which we will be able to enjoy life at the fullest as it unfolds. I believe that no matter what path you take, inspiration and self-esteem based on self-love is necessary to live up to your highest potential. Mami strives to coach and train women and men to transform personal and professional dreams and goals and turn them into action & results so they can live their best life in every way.
