WHAT’S NEW? Are you in control of the way your food is grown?

I recently read an article on the Care2 website about a suit that was presented to court in New York State by organic farmers against Monsanto. I copied a bit of the article below for you to read.

Monsanto’s bullying tactics received a legal nod of approval on February 24th, when Judge Naomi Buchwald dismissed a suit brought against the company by the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA). The association was joined by 82 other plaintiffs. Nearly 300,000 organic farmers were represented in the action.

According to Judge Buchwald (pdf), the plaintiffs failed to prove their case. Only one farmer and one seed distributor claimed to have already purchased contaminated seed. Neither of them claimed Monsanto’s seeds were among the “offending seeds.” Monsanto had demanded royalty payments from only one of the plaintiffs. The judge did not consider the company’s history of threats and suits against conventional farmers sufficient evidence Monsanto would sue the plaintiffs.

Monsanto has a long history of threatening farmers – and it makes me wonder what it would take to have America really see what is going on with the quality of our food in this country. Of course the ruling will be appealed – but still, it’s not a good omen that yet again Monsanto is not being held responsible for the effects is is having our our earth.

So I’m curious as to what you think – do you believe that modified seeds will take over and that your food supply will be comprised? Is it important that you eat organic? Do you care if your food supply is permanently and irreversibly changed? Do post below!!
