Jerusalem

Of all the sacred sites in the world, The Holy Land is certainly one of the most inspiring and emotional. It is remarkable that three of the largest mono-theistic religions were born in this tiny area: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Consider that Jerusalem is where Solomon built the Great Temple, Christ was crucified, and the Prophet Mohammed came during his famous night journey. Indeed the Holy Land has been a place of great faith and hope - and terrible war and sorrow.

Israel is home to not only the three largest Abrahamic traditions, but to offshoots of those religions such as the Druze, and the Samaritans. In addition the Ba’hai faith has their temple here. Even if you do not practice any of these religions, you cannot help but be deeply touched by the power and mystery of this land.

Dung Gate During our time in Israel we will travel through time and immerse ourselves in the footsteps of the great spiritual masters. By connecting to these sacred and holy spaces we will find our own internal holy land and divinity. Your heart will open as you move through these places of prayer and devotion. I invite you to share my love of this beautiful country and experience the power and the magic of it. This will be a journey you will not forget!

As is typical for a Journeys of the Spirit retreat, you will experience class time daily, time for sharing with the group, reflection and meditation time, and one-on-one personal time with your group leader (along with fun and shopping time too of course!). It is our intent that you return home with an open heart and mind along with the tools you need to make the changes in your life you desire.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20 – TIBERIAS (B/-/-)
We will take a private boat across the Sea of Galilee. See the Genosar Boat, a Galilee fishing boat from approximately the 1st century AD. The boat was preserved in the muddy sediment of the lake floor and revealed in the 1986 when drought caused the lake to recede to record low levels. Visit Capernaum where Jesus preached, and his disciples, Peter, Andrew, and perhaps others, made their homes. Climb to the Upper Galilee and the city of Zafed. Zafed is one of the four holiest Jewish cities and the town carries the mystical ambience of the Kabbalah. Visit the art galleries and the ancient synagogues. Then drive to Tiberias. Evening: visit the Caprece Diamond Plant and see Israel’s leading industry in action.

Capernaum THURSDAY, MAY 21 - TIBERIAS (B/-/-)
This morning we drive up to the Golan Heights. Stop in Katzrin, the only city in the Golan Heights, with its famous winery, Golan Wines. Continue to Mt. Bental for an outstanding view of the Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights. With the conclusion of our visit we will continue through the Golan Heights by a 4X4 jeep, off the beaten track and stop to gaze down over the Galilee as the Syrians once did. In the Valley of the Tears, hear the moving story of the brave Kahalani battle to secure the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur. Continue to the ruins of the prehistoric settlement at Tel Dan, once a thriving Canaanite community and the northern limit of the Promised Land. Return to Tiberias for overnight.

FRIDAY, MAY 22 – JERUSALEM (B/-/D)
Leave Tiberias early in the morning and drive to Beth Shean and see one of the largest Roman cities being excavated in the world today. On to Beth Alpha to view the magnificent mosaics in the floor of a 6th century synagogue. On to Megiddo, the "Hill of Battles," where archaeologists have uncovered 20 civilizations built one upon another. At this site, King Solomon built his vast stables and, in 609 BC, good King Josiah died in battle. Look over the peaceful Jezreel Valley where the Battle of Armageddon is to take place one day. Then climb the Judean Hills to the most beautiful city in the world, Jerusalem, for Shabbat dinner and overnight. Our hotel, Dan Boutique, is located in the heart of Jerusalem opposite Mount Zion and the Old City walls. A lobby restaurant serves light dairy meals and a choice of hot and cold drinks and full Israeli buffet breakfast. Other facilities and services include an outdoor Jacuzzi, fitness center and a business center. www.danhotels-israel.com

Masada SATURDAY, MAY 23 – JERUSALEM (B/L/-)
Depart Jerusalem and drive east to the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth. Continue for Masada. Take the cable car to the top of the rock and see the Roman palaces, store houses, synagogues and bath house, which witnessed the Jewish resistance to the Romans approximately 2,000 years ago. Descend by cable car and drive to the Dead Sea for a float in the water. See Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1947. Return to Jerusalem for overnight.

SUNDAY, MAY 24 - JERUSALEM (B/L/-)
Enter the Jewish Quarter of the Old City through the Dung Gate. A special visit to the Davidson Center with its new, multi-media presentation reveals Jerusalem in the days of Jesus. We will see the "Temple Steps," the original set of 15 steps revealing the Temple’s Entrance to the Court of the Israelites. Walk to the Western Wall, the holiest site in all Judaism. Here stands the only visible remains of Herod’s splendid Second Temple where Jesus walked and taught. Experience and explore the new "Jerusalem Through the Generations" display. Recent excavations show us the “Western Wall Tunnel,” huge arched spaces just north of the Western Wall. These link with a water tunnel cut through the rock to the north, apparently dug in the Hasmonean period (163 BC to 37 BC). Return to your hotel for overnight. Then visit the excavation and visitors Center of the City of David, and see the Jerusalem that King David built 3,000 years ago. Return to your hotel for overnight.

Wailing Wall MONDAY, MAY 25 - JERUSALEM (B/-/-)
This morning we will drive to the Hadassah Medical Center where we will visit the synagogue that is the home to the Chagall Windows. Continue to Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial for a visit, including the Children's Pavilion and the Valley of the Communities. Drive to Mt. Herzl for a visit to the Military Cemetery as well as the Herzel, Golda Meir, and Itzhak Rabin tombs. Drive to the Israel Museum and to the Shrine of the Book to see the exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Also see the wonderful model of Jerusalem for the days of Second Temple.

From here will continue to the Israel Supreme Court Building, which until 1992, Israel's Supreme Court was housed in rented premises. Its new building, is architecturally impressive. The building links old and new with mosaics from Byzantine times and bricks reminiscent of those in the Old City alongside white Mediterranean walls. The architects incorporated biblical ideas into their work with law and truth illustrated by lines to show a direct path and justice represented by curves. A short walk away is the Knesset (Israel's Parliament), where you will see the grand Menorah, the ancient - and enduring - symbol of our land.

Evening: Enjoy the premier folklore performance for visitors – "Jerusalem of Gold". The performances are dynamic and energetic, offering a special Israeli cultural and artistic event for all groups in Jerusalem. The evening has received warm praise from both tourists and tour guides alike. Dances are performed in colorful costumes and with youthful energy by "Mehola Jerusalem". The exhilarating dances from the many cultures of this land are accompanied by professional musicians and a multi-lingual presenter and singer. Return to your hotel for overnight.

Negev TUESDAY, MAY 26 - JERUSALEM (B/L/-)
This morning we will drive west from Jerusalem to Neot Kedumim, the Biblical Landscape Reserve in Israel is a unique endeavor to re-create the physical setting of the Bible in all its depth and detail. Far more than a "garden" showing various biblical plants, Neot Kedumim embodies the panorama and power of the landscapes that helped shape the values of the Bible and provided a rich vocabulary for expressing them. Since it is the beginning of spring we will be able to "work the land". The land that you are about to enter.is not like the land of Egypt, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your foot" (Deuteronomy 11:10). The foot-operated water wheel also appears in rabbinic literature as a wheel-of-fortune image: one day you're full, one day you're empty; one day you're up, one day you're down. If you're the one on the top, help the ones on the bottom--for tomorrow, the wheel will turn. Our tour will end with a biblical lunch. From here we will make our way south of Latrun to Beit Guvrin and participant in an on going archaeological dig. You will get your hands dirty and you might find some ancient coins and pieces of pottery. Return to your hotel for overnight.

Dung Gate WEDNESDAY, MAY 27 - JERUSALEM (B/-/-)
Drive to the Mount of Olives for an awe inspiring, panoramic view of Jerusalem. Enter the Christian Quarter of the Old City through the Lion Gate. Here is the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the blind man and St. Anne's Church with extraordinary acoustics. Walk the Way of the Cross, the Via Dolorosa, visit the Monastery of the Sisters of Zion and the Floor of the Lithostrothos of the Ecce Ommo Arch (Behold the Man). Visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

In 325 AD, Helen, Constantine’s mother, first requisitioned the area for a church. The site was rigorously reconstructed into a splendid Byzantine basilica. It is important for us to appreciate the work of Helen in preserving many of our Christian sites that otherwise would have been lost to time. This 4th century church was largely destroyed by the Turks in 1009 AD, and partially restored in 1048 AD. The impressive stone decorations adorning the facade date from Crusader times. In its current form, the church preserves the Crusader structure and is shared by two major Christian denominations, the Greek Orthodox and the Roman Catholic.
Return to your hotel for time to relax before your flight home. At 8:15PM you will be transferred to the airport for your nonstop Delta Airlines flight # 153, departing Tel Aviv at 11:25PM.

THURSDAY, MAY 28 - HOME
Arrive Atlanta at 5:35AM. After clearing US Customs and Immigration, connect to your Delta Airlines gateway.
