Dear Friends,

WHAT’S NEW? A Very Brave Young Woman

Malala

Malala is a 14 year old force of nature, shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education and blogging for the BBC. But she’s alive, and so is her dream of education for all girls in Pakistan.

Let’s help her realize it – a UN envoy will deliver the Avaaz.org petition to Pakistani President Zardari in a few days for an expert-backed plan to get girls into school. If her story and bravery resonates with you: Sign the petition now!

I encourage you to read about her and watch the video (you can click on the picture) about how people in Pakistan are reacting to what happened to her. Another good article was written on the BBC website about the same situation.

OUR GUEST ARTICLE

Are you living YOUR passion?

I wanted to share with you something that Rev. David Ault wrote regarding something he is very passionate about in life. I find that when people are truly and fully engaged in life they are happier, healthier, and they tend to feel more fulfilled. So I ask you the question – are you living your passion?

International Volunteer Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Behold my passion. My life purpose gained greater clarity when I arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia in the latter part of January 2004. What started out as a routine sacred site journey turned into a significant part of my life’s calling.

The people who were a part of my tour that year experienced the unforgettable privilege of feeding some of the most destitute souls along the banks of the Tonle Sap Lake in this part of SE Asia.

After careful instruction on what to expect when feeding hundreds of impoverished children, we went to local merchants to purchase appropriate, nourishing food. After clearing out three local street markets of everything they had, the total cost came to a whopping $86 US dollars.

It was there alongside an empty vendor stand that one of life’s defining moments occurred. I realized that even I could do something to create ongoing support for these children who had nothing – a vow that would transform my life.

Volunteer vacation Angkor Wat, Cambodia

It has taken many years, many mistakes and set-backs including Communist interrogation, but the ultimate dream came true when I was approved in 2009 to open up a non-government regulated school within the Siem Reap area.

Since then, donor participation has allowed me the privilege to build two outdoor pavilions, a bathroom, and fresh water well facilities. Serving well over 200 students annually, we teach English, mathematics, native Cambodian music and dance.

We also emphasize life skills and agriculture training along with providing hygiene and medical assistance to the orphaned and disenfranchised children throughout the Siem Reap region. To date we have constructed 23 fresh water wells throughout the neighboring villages with a goal to provide at least a dozen more every year.

I started Khmer Child Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization stateside, that aligns with Future Khmer Child – a non-government regulated organization (NGO) in Cambodia, to facilitate the funding of these ongoing programs.

Volunteer travel Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Every year, we outline a goal that will benefit the growing demands of our school. The project for early 2012 is aimed at constructing a sewing center to provide vocational training for young girls as a preventative to the ongoing threats of a growing slave trade market.

Future projects include housing for those who are orphaned as well as meeting our yearly budget which covers school administration, teacher salaries, medical support, food and utilities. Our success is because of your ongoing support in providing these resilient kids a chance for a better now and a brighter future.

Blessings & Love, David Ault
Director, Khmer Child Foundation

If you want to experience something deeply heartfelt and visit the stunning sacred ruins of Angkor Wat – I highly recommend signing up for David’s upcoming Voluntour Journey Jan 23-Feb 2nd, 2013. Details here!
