Sultry Mexico – Filled with Mysteries & Magic
Mexico has always been a destination close to our hearts here at Journeys of the Spirit and we’ve taken many life changing journeys to this breathtaking country. While it is dotted with beautiful beaches on both, the Caribbean as well as the Pacific Coast is where you’ll find most of the tourists, yet there’s so much more to Mexico which is often overlooked.
Here are some of our favorite sites for spiritual journeys…
Thanks to the Mayan civilization over 2,000 years ago, Mexico has a fascinating history and colorful culture which can be experienced by venturing further inland to places like Teotihuacan which was a university of sacred spirituality and translated means “The place where men meet the Gods.”
Here you’ll find this enormous archaeological site in the Basin of Mexico, just 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. Teotihuacan contains some of the largest pyramidal structures built in the pre-Columbian Americas which were built over 2,000 years ago. Indeed the base of the Pyramid of the Sun is the same size as the Great Pyramid in Egypt! It will take your breath away and has personally changed my life forever.
Just an hour by air from Mexico City and a short drive by car is Palenque, a Mayan city state in Southern Mexico which dates back to 226 BC and is sure to inspire with its high energy and lush surroundings. It’s fascinating architecture along with the presence of The Temple of Inscriptions (the mighty Pakal’s tomb which contained the second longest glyphic text in the Mayan world) makes this site quite special.
Another amazing power spot is Tepoztlan which is like Mexico’s own Sedona, and if I hadn’t been there myself I would have never known this gem existed. It’s fondly called a Pueblos Magicos – and rightly so, as it’s a magical town in every way – from it’s vibrant market and delicious restaurants to it’s delightful joyous people.
Tulum is the only Mayan port city ever found and is simply stunning. It’s the perfect place to combine with a sensual retreat in one of the serene boutique resorts on the Mayan Riviera and it’s pure white beaches. You’ll find more little yoga retreats and spa getaways per square foot around Tulum than anywhere else in Mexico!
This year we have numerous spiritual journeys to Mexico but if you’re not able to attend on those specific dates, why not do something on your own? This is also a wonderful option if you would like to deepen your experience of these sacred sites by spending as much time as you like in each place and traveling on your own schedule.
Contact us and let us know what you would like to experience on your next trip to Mexico. We’ll make sure that it will be everything you have been hoping for.

PS: Feeling a tad squeamish about Mexico? You shouldn’t. According to the US Government’s Travel Website: “Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major [drug] trafficking routes.” The places we recommend traveling to are lovely and none of them are on the Mexican border or in trafficking routes.
Not going to Mexico is like saying you’re not going to visit New York City because there’s crime in Chicago. The border towns are far from the sites most travelers are going to. The bottom line is you court danger any place you go today including out your front door, and either you travel consciously with an open heart – or you remain in fear and at home.
